Actually, if I were you I would invest in another modem. I used a HaM modem for a while and have many fond memories.

I wouldn't switch without trying the Intel drivers first, though. Some systems work great with them, and if yours does, you've just saved $20 or so. Other than that, I would make sure I've got the right driver for my operating system and distro (like Thymox says, they tend to be in tar.gz form or rpm form, and optimized for Red Hat, Mandrake, etc.)
