Intel Atom N570 with Ubuntu, is it viable?

I am a newbie with Linux and am not a tech bod in any way, having used Ubuntu 11.04 on an old laptop for the last 3 months and I'm finding my way around it and all its additional progs quite well.

I am thinging of purchasing a new 10.1" netbook, one without an OS. It has an Intel Atom N570 CPU, with a 250GB HDD and 2GB RAM.

My question is, will the full Ubuntu 11.04 or 11.10 distros be suited to this machine?

It will mainly be used for e-mail, browsing, photos when travelling and the occasional word processing.

Would be pleased to receive thoughts and ideas.

Ubuntu no longer has a netbook specific spin - the full iso should detect the Atom processor on install.
Should run fine for your uses - video woud be the only concern. Google for tests - www.phoronix.com would be a good start.

I just had a look at Bodhi for a lower specification than that - very impressed.

syg00,

Thank you for your quick response. I will certainly have a look at the Bodhi distro, it may do just what I need... and probably more. Thanks again.

Try some of these if you get time. Might as well test now while it is new.

jefro,

Have had a quick look through the listed distros... very interesting... thank you.
I haven't bought the netbook yet, but will certainly try a few systems off this list.
It does get somewhat confusing, though, for someone new to Linux distros.
