Unhappy Intel 845GL Problem...

Hi guys,
I am a newbie to linux and believe that linux is far better than windows from what my friends say. But i was trying to install Redhat Linux 7.2 and i couldnt get the graphics version running. It shows some error all the time . Then i thought MAndrake 9 would solve my problem and instaled mandrake and i found that it detects the video card but it still doesnt show the graphics version.

IT keeps saying Screens found but none useable. Then it says Fatal Error: Screen not found. What to do?? Where is the problem? in driver or something. I have been trying to figure this out for past 1 week and i am totally fedup.

Please, linux lovers out there, help me out. I would love to work in linux but please help me... so that i could work with it...

Thanks a lot
Vijay Venkatesh

What type of video chip is it. You can probably use the vesa driver for X to get it running.

I think the 845 integrated graphics is not supported untill XFree86 ver 4.3. RH 7.2 uses 4.1 or 4.2. You might want to go here http://www.xfree86.org and get the latest version. (or use RH 9 which will be released in a week or so.)

Thumbs up

hey guys,
i am happy to tell you that i am posting this from my Redhat Linux 8.0 machine, and not from the Win** one. Redhat linux 8.0 supports the Intel 845 GL chipset but there are 2 problems,
The best display setting that i can get is 256 colors with 1024X768, if i want 16 bit color i can only get a resolution of 640X480 (ie the lowest one...) Also with the 256 colors running, if i open any window, the whole screen gives blurred colors here and there.
The second problem i am facing is, it audio wont be heard...

What could be the possible reasons?? Please help me out...
TThanks a lot,
Vijay
