In a terminal window. Look around the menus in your desktop environment for entries like "Terminal" or "Konsole".

you can also download a packgage for your distro? e.g. all i had to do is to type 'installpkg amsn-0.95-i486.tgz'.

"in what box would i have to type in ./configure?"

to do that you have to be in directory where 'configure' file is located. or you can type a whole path e.g. '/home/me/Desktop/packages/amsn/configure'.
