Instant Messaging

Hello

I have have been tasked at my company to setup Instant Messaging, but I have no clue where to begin or what to do,

I have done some reading and and havent really been successful.

I want to setup an Open source program that we can link to LDAP, and be able to communicate.

If you cna provide links to where i can read more about it or what program is safe to use on both linux and windows machines

some info would be nice

thanx

The de-facto IM solution nowadays is XMPP.

There are numerous XMPP servers out there (which YOU will have to setup) ... see openfire , ejabbered etc.

and for the client software ... Psi would be my choice ...but ofcourse you can give your users to use whatever they want

I'd recommend Ejabberd

http://www.ejabberd.im/

It's in most distribution, good documentation, very malleable. Comes with a web based admin tool so you can hand over administration to to someone else at a later date without giving them shell access.

Can also be setup to relay to and from other IM providers (AIM, MSN, Google Talk, etc)
