I installed Xine using Synaptic, as I could not get Totem to work (it still says it doesn't have the required plug-ins).

The installation worked correctly.

However, whenever I run Xine, the system locks up completely.

Two questions:

1. Any idea why Xine locks up the system please?

2. When I used other versions of Linux in the past (e.g. Mandrake, SuSE, etc.), a lockup like this could usually be overcome either by pressing Ctrl-Alt-Backspace to restart Xwindows, or by pressing Ctrl-Alt-F1 to go to a text virtual console and restarting from there. Neither of these seem to work in FC3. A lockup is total and requires a press of the reset. Luckily, the system has always recovered without corruption so far - but it doesn't seem a good idea. Any idea why this happens please? Even XP can usually recover a crash without needing a full reset. We should be better than them

Incidentally, Ogle installed and works fine (except the Stop button doesn't work), so Xine and Totem are not essential - I just don't like to be beaten by not getting them to work.

Thanks

I tried this and it scrolled up tons of output on the console screen and also loaded Xine. Once I selected DVD and set it to Region 2, it started to play the DVD - very slowly and jerkily.

Then a message popped up to say the framerate was dropping too much - or something like that. Hence the slow and jerky play, I assume.

Then the system locked up again

Oddly enough, the same DVD (Hellboy) plays fine in Ogle. Is Xine more demanding of resources than Ogle?

If so, why would that be please?

Even more strange, Totem still says it doesn't have the required Plug-ins to play the DVD. Does Totem use different plug-ins than the others?

does not seem to be working at the moment
