Installing Windows Vista on VWware server from recovery DVD !!!
 

Hi,

is it possible to install Windows vista on VWware server from the recovery DVD than the iso file ?
Because my Laptop didn't came up with a DVD or CD of vista. Only option I had was to create a recovery DVD from the pre-installed Windows Vista (I hates...this).

So now I have, just a recovery DVD, but it doesn't have an iso file inside it.

So if anyone done this pls reply me?

PS: I also never tried it, If it is possible, I would love to try it.

I'm not sure what I'm missing...how is this Linux related? I don't think that installing Windows Vista is a linux issue. Contact Microsoft or your laptop manufacturer for help

I am trying to install Windows Vista on top of Linux (Fedora 9) using VMware server. No dual boot.

Ok...bring up the VMware instance, and boot off your recovery DVD. Install Windows.

I doubt it will allow you to install into a vmware machine with the recovery CD. (But please, don't let my opinion stop you from trying) those CD's are usually tied to the OEM BIOS of the machine they came with and won't install on other hardware.

What you could try is installing Vista on the laptop, and then use the vmware converter(free) to copy that installed machine into a vmware image that could be loaded onto any vmware server.

I tried the way you suggested by using VMware converter to make the image. It was successful. Thanks a lot

I tried it from recovery DVD. But I couldn't install. It says this recovery DVD cannot be used for this system. The reason I believe is the same as you mentioned "Bios integration".

I tried VirtualBox (http://www.virtualbox.org/ )and VirtualBox is much easier than VMware. But this time I tried Windows XP, which is much faster than vista. Everything works great except the Webcam turns to blank. Hope Sun microsystem will soon fix it

Eventhough my inbuilt camera on the Laptop gives a black screen. My old USB Creative Camera do work on VirtualBox. I m bit happy now
