I have a centos server (5.8) in a datacentre and was wondering which is the best way to go about setting up a vpn connection. I will be using a windows 7 machine to connect to the server if that makes any difference.

A choice of vpn is based in a few things. One is the type of data you need to secure. One is the topology on the connection. Another is the availability of cross platform support. Another might be speed. Might include authentication method. For example a certificate based may have you sending usb flash drives with the key to each user. How many users? What level of permission do you need? Does simple https or ssh or sftp work?

Look at maybe openvpn to start.

If this is a commercial deal then many a dedicated hardware device should be in front of the server. That device may have a vpn that could be used.
