Installing Updates Problem on Fedora 12
 

Hi
I have been installing these updates on Fedora 12 and so far, my computer now has 3 more fedora sub-versions "not sure if that IS their name". So when I first boot the pc, the 3 versions appear. Normally, that wouldn't seem like a problem "although I don't know why don't the new ones simply delete the old ones"..However, the new ones don't work. Only the oldest form which I installed through a CD is the one that works. The others just cause the computer screen to flash a couple of times and freezes.
Any ideas?

You have updated the kernel. This always leaves the last kernel present in case there are problems with the new version. Fedora automatically allows 3 versions to be present. After that it deletes the oldest when it installs a new one.

I think your problem is graphics related. Do you have an nVidia graphics card ?
Have you ever installed the nvidia drivers ?

If so, I would interrupt the boot at the grub menu, and edit the kernel options for the latest kernel by adding rdblacklist=nouveau to the end of the line. Then hit return.

Further details on configuring an nvidia card so that you don't have to update the driver each time a new kernel is installed, can be found here. I suggest using the RPM Fusion approach.

Through the terminal, I found that that it is ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility X1400. Would the nvidia drivers work because I hear a lot of people talking about them or would it be better to download the ATI drivers?

Since now there are already 3 versions and only the oldest one works with me, I am afraid to install any new ones.

You should not install any other video card drivers for your GPU. It's only supported by the open source drivers that Fedora is using by default.

When booting a newer kernel, you should disable the "quiet rhgb" options to the kernel so that you can see the output from the kernel and find out why it's just freezing.
