Installing ubuntu 6.06 LTS on vista machine gets stuck :"Installing Hardware drivers"


Hi people!

I was trying to install ubuntu on my vista laptop and it got stuck on "installing hardware drivers" and did not move ahead...

could you please tell me what could be wrong???
my machine is :

AMD athlon X2 64 bit. with windows vista on it...

I would try installing the newest ubuntu release, 7.10, then if that doesn't work I would try the alternate install cd
