Goto www.freshmeat.net and download a package called ayttm. It is a chat program that supports AOL, Yahoo, MSN, ICQ, IRC and Jabber.

cd into the folder, and then read the INSTALL or README files.
usually to install things, the commands (in order) are:
1. ./configure
2. make
3. su <password>
4. make install
but it can be different for every program. that's why you usually have to read the INSTALL/README to find out what to do. gl
