Installing the kernel?

I don't know if this is possible, but I want to install a Linux kernel to a completely brand new hard drive. I don't want the entire desktop interface, just the terminal. How can I do this?

Thanks

Use minimum install option. When you do installation it gives you option to do custom installation > select that and deselect anything which is releated to x-windows and desktop.

Just the kernel? May be you mean a minimal system with only a command line. Then use a minimalistic distro or a minimum mode available in some distros like Fedora, and Debian.

Have a look at LFS too. Don't know if this will interest you, especially if you are an absolute newbie.

Anyway, you need more than a kernel for a workable system. For example you would need a shell.

Ok. I get it. I might just go with a minimal install with lunar, but we'll see. Is there a way to get, say, kernel 2.6 and then the bshell right over it?
