Installing software troubles - I must be doing something wrong

So I'm trying to install dropbox onto my Slackware laptop. I downloaded the source and found that Nautilus needs to be installed. Okay, so I went and downloaded that source and found it needed glib and gtk+ the latest versions. So I downloaded those two, and by some miracle glib compiled but gtk said it needed cairo. So I downloaded that and did ./configure and it said that there was no configure file in the directory (I was definitely in the right directory).

How on earth do slackware people deal with this exactly? I don't mind going through the dependency trees to install software, but what do you do when stuff won't compile or something?

Theres usually a txt file in the tarball called readme.txt or install.txt or similar with desciptions about dependencies and how to install it.

an easier way is to go to and download a script + the source needed by the script that will configure and make everything for you, and will make it in to a slackware package for you to install.
