installing software

Hello,my problems are always when i attempt to download any software, an error message opens
stating that adobe 8 cannot read it. when saved in downloads clicking open does not function and i cant find an uninstall for the adobe reader 8.
I cannot get any anit-virus protection, problem compounded by having no cd input.
thanks

Welcome to LQ!

It sounds very much like ypu're trying to run Windows programs on Linux which in general is not the way to do things.
There are Linux applications which will open PDF files, e.g. Okular and Open Office will both read and write pdfs.
The next question is why you would want anti virus protection as Linux tends to have very few viruses (I've had no protection on any of my systems since I started using Linux in 2000.

Whatever distribution you have, most software is installed from repositories on the net(no CD required!), not on a per-manufacturer's-site basis or CD/DVDs like Windows. Check for a Software manager.

Read this which helps explain the differences: http://linux.oneandoneis2.org/LNW.htm
You could nearly say it's obligatory!

On re-reading your post... You are running Linux are you or should you be asking your questions in a Window's forum?

Ok. OK. I've just seen the Fedora logo in your profile.

Play Bonny!

I can only try to guess what you seem to be doing and what you ought to do; if I have mistaken my apology.

It seems you are trying to click on a pdf link where a pdf plugin is called to the action. To download file on a link use "Right Click" on the link then "Save Link as..." or you may right-click on the link then choose "Open In A New Tab" a download page will appear then do as usual. Or..... if adobe is there and it is disturbing, you may disable it mean time: On the Firefox choose Tools, then Addons, choose tab Plugins, then click Disable. Your downloading should get into normal.

What file have you downloaded? Every file is opened by a fitting application. You can Right Click on it then choose the needed application from the dialogue.

You do not need anti-virus. Just don't login as root if you want to have peace of mind, just login as $USER.

If you will, try to give us more specific information about your problem so that our peers will find it easy to respond to your need.

Good luck.

Are you downloading Windows ".exe" files? That sure won't work, becasue Linux is not Windows.

You should first check out your package manager for equivalent sowtware.

You can install Widnows software in Linux using "Wine" (which lets you run Windows apps by acting as a layer that converts WIndows-specific calls to Linux ones), but that should be a last resort.

You generally don't need anti-virus software in Linux. There are Linux anti-virus programs, but even so, they are more about not letting you spread Windows viruses (which Linux is completely immune to, since it can't run Windows executables) by sharing infected files than about protecting Linux.
