Installing software...

Hi Folks,
And many thanks to all how offered much wanted help and advice....

I am now using a fairly new version of SimplyMepis (6.2), this includes an FTP program: gftp. An MP3 player, etc. All of which I missed in the early version. Oh did I mention that I have only been running Linux for about 2 weeks! Along side of XP in a dual boot set-up.

I still can't get around the installing new softwere bit! I understand that for me Debian packages are best? But how do I go about a .tar.gz package. This seems to be my only big problem at the moment. Please can someone give clear precise instructions to a NEWBIE!!

Also Where would I find a suitable package of Filezilla or WS-FTP.
Also I need a program to edit my (Canon) CRW Raw image files.. The Gimp don't seem to like them, unless someone knoe better, and the is very possible..

Again Many thinks.

Mel.

I thought ws-ftp was windows software? gftp works very
similarly, though; try that.
As for your Canon-pix - look here.

After doing a bit of research on what is the best way to go, we downloaded and installed Bibble and found Canon CRW raw pics are just fine with it. Bibble has a batch converter to extract jpg files - a nice bonus too.

To install SW, first try the package manager (Synaptic in Mepis). Depending on what you are looking for, you may need to enable some more repositories (in one of the Synaptic menus). The package manager will automatically take care of dependencies.

Something in .tar or .tar.gz format can contain just about anything--you simply have to extract it and see what's there. Sometimes there is simply an installation script--others you may have to compile. (If you see things like "configure" or "Makefile", then you will be compiling.

Installing software... Again

Hi,
To all thanks again for your help, it's beginning to work. OK I did something like:

tar xvf FileZilla, etc, etc... and it produced a folder and files in:
/home/Mel/FileZilla3 this contains 2 folders, one called share this seems to have languages and resources in it.

Also a BIN folder,in this, there is an EXE file FileZilla. so is this the program itself?? Must be. BUT how do I run it? I could try just clicking on it. But how do I get an icon on the desktop or in the KMenu list...

Kind regards

Mel.
