Installing Slackware
 

Ok ive nearly finished installin slackware. It gives me the option of choosing a few things. Fluxbox, blackbox, KDE????Which one is the best? Im going to need to network this as well

If you don't know any of these I suggest installing all of them and to try them out. I think KDE and maybe Xfce will be the best to start with because they can be configured more easily than fluxbox or blackbox via the GUI.
You would also be on the safe side to install only KDE -- additional desktop environments or window managers can be installed very easily afterwards and KDE doesn't require any of them.

heres a noob question and a half. In the setup while settin up my network is says enter hostname. Do i enter the workgroup of my windows network or what?

The Slackware full installation doesn't give us any options... (I guess the user has done that..cuz that is the easiest)

Also, as far as choosing the GUI is concerned..I would recommend going with KDE.

Slackware doesn't have GNOME support anymore.

The other GUIs (other than KDe -- Blackbox, Fluxbox, XFCE etc.) are a bit less intuitive...

After all, it is simply a personal choice..

Hostname is nothing but the name of the computer you want to appear on the network.

Then it may ask you for the Domain..that will be the "Workgroup" of your windows Network.

I'm not sure if you're right with the second one -- even if you give your host the name "host.local.net" this will not automatically give you the rihgt Windows network workgroup name IMHO. To connect to a Windows network you'll have to tell Samba the workgroup name I think (I have it set up this way -- the domain thing doesn't do anything for me).

For accessing Windows Computers, you will need Samba for sure.

Samba will take care of the Networking facilities. But mentioning what domain you want to be on, IMHO should be entered in the setup itself.

Domain isn't the same as workgroup. You can put pretty much anything you like for domain (if you don't actually have a specific need to set one up), but I just use what my router uses. titopoquito is correct in saying you have to tell Samba the work group name.

I mentioned Domain to be workgroup cuz thats what the user wants to have there.

Why should you apologize about your post? My post was for the OP to tell him/her that the question about the domain during Slackware setup shouldn't matter too much in most cases. It's just a form of collaboration to give the OP the most helpful answers :D
