installing slack on vmware
 

hi. i tried to install slack 11 on vmware . at first i could not partition my virtual drive because fdisk did not see any the SCSI drive on my virtual machine. i then changed the HDD to IDE and succeded in partitioning my virtual drive . after installing slack (after reboot) there was only a black screen with the promter top left. what do you think i did wrong ? i'm a newbie to linux .

here are some details of what i might done wrong :

> after installing the packeges the installer asked me what kernel should i use? i tried the option install kernel from the setup but it did not work so i had to opt for the second one :select from disk
and since it used the sata.i kernel i selected that

> when i created the new machine i selected as cdrom a virtual drive from winxp in which i mounted an iso dvd file with slack11 . ( i did the same with other linux distribution like suse knoppix fedora 5 / 6 that i installed and it worked well. )

how about installing(partitioning) on a SCSI drive with fdisk? what command should i use : fdisk /dev/... (sdc did not work).

You can without a problem boot with huge26.s and virtual sata harddisk. Use cfdisk instead of fdisk, it is often regarded as easier than fdisk. Don't reboot at that point but call setup. Use the huge26.s kernel on install and after your first boot install the kernel modules for 2.6.17.13 from /extra. That is how it worked for me with vmware server 1.0.1.

well now i forgot to mention i use vmware workstation and that cfdisk didn't work at all. Also when installing it i made a floppy diks from which to boot i think .how can i boot from it or start slack in another way so that i dont need to reinstall. code lines would be great.

Hm, why did you try fdisk /dev/sdc? Your virtual vmware device should be /dev/sda if it is an SCSI device and /dev/hda if it is IDE. If you reinstall make sure to install lilo (in MBR of the same harddisk).

titopoquito , you were right huge26.s did the job well and i managed to boot slack in kde . but now i have to solve another problem . when installin i selected an usb mouse support but it is not working . i have to figure out now how to reinstall the mouse or something . Any ideeas?

I would search here on the forum. You can edit your /etc/X11/xorg.conf to change the mouse's protocol type. I don't know what is usual for usb mice. No need to reinstall though.
Maybe even the manual change is not necessary. For me it was quite good to install the vmware tools, before that the mouse reacted somehow sluggish. Installing the vmware tools installed a new mouse driver "vmmouse" (as well as drivers and settings for the virtual graphics card). If you powered up your virtual machine choose "Install Vmware tools" from the vmware menu. Then you can mount a emulated cdrom in your Slackware and install the drivers.
