Installing Red Hat 5 on IBM xSeries 346

Hello all,

I'm new to this so please bear with me.
I'm trying to instal RH 5 64 on an IBM x346.
In the BIOS I enabled host raid (could not see disks if disabled) and setup a RAID-1 (mirror) 2 HD's.
I have then proceeded to install RH 5 (using the GUI) on to the mirror which appears to have installed fine.
When I reboot the system is seems to boot to the OS but the screen is black with a few thin white lines appearing on the screen. I thought this may be related to the on-board graphics soo I installed it again on another x346 (except this one had more memory). Upon rebooting this post install I am presented with the Error booting OS.

I have been on the IBM site and it looks like they only support RH 3 & 4 but seen posts on here with guys installing RH 7 so i'm assuming this can be achieved.

Are there any special drivers I require to install RH 5 on this hardware?

Any help/advice would be appreciated.

A bit of clarification on version nums. RH used to have a (free) distro known as RedHat Linux (RHL) which finished at v9 many years ago & hasn't been supported or updated in years.
https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikiped.../Red_Hat_Linux

The current replacement distro is known as RedHat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and has only just reached v6.0.
https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikiped...terprise_Linux.
You have to pay RedHat to get support & updates for this distro.

If you want RHEL for free, see Centos https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/CentOS, which is a free re-build that includes updates but no support.

Hi Chris,

The distro i'm using is RHEL 5.4 64-BIT for AMD64 & Intel64.

I have also tried to install Fedora 14 - x86 64. I managed to get to the desktop screen on the first reboot but no icons appeared. On the second reboot I could see a blue line at the bottom of the screen (as if the fedora desktop had been moved off screen).

If you require any more information please let me know.

Thanks for your prompt reply.

on a server I WOULD NOT install fedora
fedora has ONLY a 13 month life
so for fedora 14 in about 10 months there will NEVER be any more updates to it
and a NEW version comes out every 6 months

install CentOS 5.5 64 bit on it
or the beta version of "Scientific Linux 6 " 64 bit ( this is in testing )
or BUY -- yes BUY -- a license for RHEL 6.0 and install 6.0
