Installing Realplayer on Mandrake 10.0

hi all.. im totally new to mandrake... let alone Linux..

im trying to install realplayer but its not working. - This is what ive done...

-Downloaded the installation package for Linux.. ¨linux 2.x (libc6 i386) RPM ¨ from real.com

-Renamed the file to realplayer.rpm

-Ran the command ¨rpm -ivh realplayer.rpm ¨ on the file.. it started installing it.. and went upto 100% in a few secs...

But nothing happened!.. i dont see realplayer anywhere.. am i forgetting anything??

-anyhoo, so i ran the same command again - and it told me ¨package RealPlayer-8.0-1 is already installed ¨

So im assuming it is installed.. but where is it???

´help is appreciated :)

Hello there ecology447!!!

Many applications(not all though), when installed in Linux, does not go directly to your "menu" button. That's because there're a hole bunch of Desktop/Window Managers for Linux. I, for example, don't know which one you are using :) (KDE? Gnome?).

Try running from the command line: I've never installed RealPlayer myself, but try typing "realplayer" or something similar at the console and see if it helps.

Good luck and Welcome to LinuxQuestions.org!

you can also run a search using this command
su root
*password*
find / -name realplayer*

and you can run the executable. You can also add it to your menu once you find it so that you don't have to run it from command line.

If it's installed properly, then you should just be able to click the start button, where you should find an option for "run command".

Just click that and when the run command box appear's, you just type "realplay" (no quotes) and that should kick the executable.

If it then start's ok, I'd right click on a desk top area, and follow create new>file>link to application.

When the link to application box is open, on the general tab, type in realplayer for the title, then click the excutable icon, which will open the available icon's box - you'll probably want to look in the applications section, because if real player installed properly, then you should have an icon there - select the realplayer icon, and OK.

then on the applications tab of "link to application", put "realplay" (again, no quotes) in the command box and just hit ok for everything else and you've got it as a desktop shortcut.

Erm, this description is for using kde by the way.

You could also have a quick look at the menus, because if the rpm installed ok (as far as you can tell that is), you may find it in multimedia>video on your start menu (that's where it is with my mandrake 10 powerpack). If it is there, you could just drag and drop for a desktop or taskbar icon to start it.

regards

John
