Installing programs from web - correct procedure

I have a fresh Ubuntu system. What is a correct procedure to install programs from web(tar.gz files loaded with browser). Where(location) should I extract them? How should I extract a loaded file? Should I then run some setup program?

Hi,

there is no generic "correct procedure". Do you have something specific you want to install?

Hi,

I had a quick look on developer.android.com but didn't see any recommendations. Since it is probably binary, single user only, you could make a directory called opt in your home directory and unpack it there. After unpacking it have a look for a README or INSTALL file or similar for more information.
