Installing program help

Hi there
I would like to install Gimp 2.0.2 help files into Gimp as for some reason they were never installed in my Slack 10 box. I have downloaded the tar.gz into my /Desktop/Downloads folder but I have no idea what to do next. The Readme shows ./configure then make, make install but its not working. Can someone please direct me?
Also I am reading "Running Linux" book and it has helped some but Linux seems pretty intimidating. I have a brain lock when it comes to installing programs!
Thanks
