Installing problems

On the downloaded version of linux do you have to burn it to a cd or can you install it from the harddrive. I'm running a windows 98 and trying to install yellowdog. If you do install it from the hard drive then what program do you use to install it? I need to know so any help is welcome. Thanks!

Well, YellowDog is mainly for the PPC which is a Macintosh or Apple. It all depends on the distro if you can install from hard drive or burn to a cd. Most will require you to burn to a cd but I would think if your running Windows98 you have just a PC and not a Mac. I'd suggest then downloading and installing another distro.

From my experience you can't install most linux OSs from windows...and if you do manage to somehow get it started, no doubt it will be a bit unstable since the install sources are meant for being run straight from a disk. As forementioned by trickykid, I'd get another distro...if you're new to linux Mandrake or Redhat is suggested, though installing RH can sometimes be time-consuming. I'd also burn the .iso files to a disk (use nero or easy cd creator, it should automatically unzip and unpackage the .iso correctly).

Once you get the cd's burned correctly, change your bios setting to boot from a cd at startup, instead of the prestet (usually floppy or the hard drive(s)). You'll have to put in your first cd, of course, and autorun should pick it up from there. If the system spits an error about a non-system disk back at you several times in a row, your disk isn't burned correctly.

Hope this helps!

I found out that recored now does work. When i put the mandrake cd in it opend up to a nice installer with 6 options for me counting the cancel, but when i put RedHat in it opend up into a bunch of files and folders. I was just wondering is that what it is supposed to do or did something get messed up on my cd and i need to redownload it and burn it? Thanks for all the help.
