Installing plugins for Firefox

I have not been able to successfully get any plugins to work in firefox. I have been searching for how to get firefox to update the plugins on a fedora system (i have an acer aspire one with a fedora system) and I am stuck! The plugins have been downloaded, and I've gotten RealPlayer and Picasa to work just fine off the internet as regular programs, but the plugins to make things play using realplayer or to use the picasa tools online won't work. The files are in the folder usr/lib/mozilla/plugins but they don't work and don't show up when I look up what plugins there are on firefox.

If anyone can help me with general info about installing plugins on a linux system, that would be greatly appreciated because I'd like to install a few other plugins (ie, googleearth and java). Thanks!
