Question installing packages (howto)

I just got linux, and am running drake 9.1. I've fixed a few problems i've already encountered, but this one is getting to me. HOW DO INSTALL THE PACKAGES!? I downloaded aMSN off of, but i can't get the prgm to run for the life of me. I got the file (file.tar.gz) and unpacked it into a download folder in my home dir. There are a few SH files too... what am i doing wrong? I checked my software install, and tried searching for it, with no luck..
So who can help me out here!?

a happy linux user, this is my second day away from windows...
