I am attempting to install Oracle linux 4.8 on a HP dl480 G8 server and encounter an error during setup, when choosing the partitioning option. The hard drive is not being detected.

Oracle Linux 4.8? Why such an old version (which, I do believe has reached EOL). The old version might also be the reason why your HD isn't detected.

Oracle Linux 6.5 is the current supported version, install that one unless you have a very good reason to go with the unsupported 4.8 version.

The problem is the client's server hosting an oracle production instance (32 bit) has the same version and I want to clone the instance for testing on this hp dl480 G8 server. I would love to install 6.5 but in this case there's no option...

You might want to contact Oracle about this, maybe they can help.

BTW: Is this correct: HP dl480 G8? I can't seem to find any info about this hardware.

Sorry just confirmed its HP dl380 G8. No wonder I wasn't getting anything! Ok I'll contact Oracle. Thanks druuna.

DL380 G8s should come with a SmartArray420i which means that until you set up the hardware RAID, eg, with the SmartStart CD/DVD, you won't see a disk. The RAID disk, once set up, usually appears within the Linux install set up as cciss0 (or something similar) rather than sda, I believe. You can obviously configure multiple Raided disks if you have sufficient physical ones installed.

You should also be able to access the ADU (Array Diagnostic Utility)from the within the POST messages to set up the RAID.

Raid has already been set up...the problem is the controller can be seen but not the disks...

Definitely contact HP for that. You can try the Forums for free, but you'll need a ctc for Phone support; maybe you can use the Client's?

Ok cool will do so.

You say you see the controller only? What is it called by the OS? You won't see any physical disks from the OS, only the logical volume you set up when you configured the RAID. As I mentioned before, it'll probably be called /dev/cciss0 You'd point your install at this.

You can set up more than one logical volume via the ADU utility dependant on the number of physical disks available to you.

I've got an old ML370 G4 server with eight 72.3Gb disks, I've two set up as root/mirror and the remaining six as a data volume. They show as /dev/cciss0 and /dev/cciss1 to the OS. (I think!) The SmartArray knows what RAID is best for the number of disks configured so you don't have to think about it.
Also, if one of the disks in the logical volume fails, you just replace it with one with the same spare part no. and it'll rebuild without any intervention at all; The SmartArray controller handles it all in the background. There's a slight performance overhead while the new disk rebuilds. You can set a rebuild priority in the ADU if you want, default is Low.

Out of curiosity, how many physical disks have you, what configuration have you set up, how many logical volumes have you defined and what are their logical names?

Thanks...this is really helpfull. There are 8 physical disks...Raid 5 is what was configured and the idea is to have one logical volume.

So, what name has your logical volume, is it /dev/cciss0?

Have you been able to install to the volume?
