Installing NVidia Drivers for my TNT2

Hi all

I have got a machine here with Knoppix 3.7, and a TNT2 card.

I downloaded the NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-6629-pkg1.run driver but I need help installing it.

I have changed the etc/innittab to level 3 as instructed, thats fine.

But when I either go into the Konsole (as root) or fo a Ctrl-Alt-F1 and type

sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86......

Nothing happens. Also I cant find this XConfig file I am supposed to amend to tell it to use the New drivers. The graphics now are really bad...

Thanks all

Hong

PS I tried typing the command in froma fresh reboot, so I know X isnt running but iy still doesnt work. No errors: just nothing happens.

You can change /etc/inittab to boot into runtime level 3 by default.
open /etc/inittab as root and change
id:5:initdefault:
to
id:3:initdefault:

That is what I ended up doing. From there, your PC will boot the comp into 3, install the drivers as per the instructions, then type
init 5
to get your GUI back. Modify your inittab back to normal and all should be well.

I am using FC3, so knoppix could be somewhat different.

Thanks for the speedy reply. I have managed to change the innit level to 3 by default and thats fine, but after I boot up:

Login: Root
Password: xxxxxxx

root@knoppix: sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86.....

At that point something is supposed to start installing, right? Instead, it just brings me back to the prompt.

Also, where/how do I edit this config file to tell it to use the NVidia driver as opposed to the Vesa driver?

Thanks

Hong

Just a warning, the 6629 drivers don't work fine with most TNT2 cards, so you may have to try a patched 6111 driver if things don't go well.
