Installing Nixnote means breaking other programs?
 

I want to install the Evernote client Nixnote. I downloaded the deb-file.

Running it gives me the message: Error: Cannot install 'libavcodec-extra-56'. I found the library with Synaptic Manager.

Problem is that I get the following warning: To be removed: audacity, blender, gimp, kdenlive, openshot, vlc (and other programs) and a bunch of libraries.

Is there a way that I can install Nixnote with the named codec without wrecking my system?

Synaptic does does have a habit of doing that sometimes, "why" I couldn't tell you. ;)

You didn't mention the distribution and version of Linux you're running but if it's Ubuntu 15.04, you can download this .deb file and install it by double clicking on it. If you're running Ubuntu 14.10, use this one. :)

I am using Bunsen Labs. It is a Debian derivative.

I downloaded nixnote2-2.0-beta4_i386.deb. Running this file gave me the dependency error.

Is there a way that I can check beforehand that downloading the file from Synaptic will not wreck my system?

From my experience, gdebi does not uninstall anything when installing a .deb file but I don't know of a way to check beforehand, not to say there isn't one. ;)

Do you know which version of Debian Bunsen Labs is based on? If Jessie, try this package. If Sid, use this one.

EDIT: From here, it looks like Jessie, if you're using the most current version.

bunsenlabs is based on jessie.

whichever package managing software you use, graphical synaptic or command line apt-get, you should not agree 'Y' to uninstall packages that you think you might need.

3 thoughts on this whole thing:

• libavcodec is an audio/video codec. are you sure you need this to manage your notes? have you tried installing with --no-install-recommends?
• at its root this is most probably a version problem. different versions of libavcodec-whatever cannot coexist, so apt needs to remove one, resulting in an overthrowing of half your system.
• nevernote requires java-runtime, which in turn most probably pulls in all those dependencies. try installing java first.

ultimately, i hope you posted this on bunsenlabs forums, you will get much better support there.
