installing new themes for xfce

Hi Im using the newest version of Vector linux and wanted to try to use themes that i have downloaded. But Im a bit confused on how to PROPERLY set them up. When you unpack the files do you need to create seperate folders and place all the little icons and gtkrc files in different places? I can usually get the theme it self to work but cant seem to get any of the icons ect to show. Any help would be appreciated.

I just dump them into ~/.themes and they work fine.
