installing netatalk and berkely db

I am still getting use to installing applications on fc3. rpms are nice and easy to install. does everything for me. anyhow, how do i install applications from a tarball? or what I mean to say is where do i install stuff. the commands in the readme.txt files usually contain good instructions but they never tell me where to install the software correctly.

any help would be great.

Thanks.

How do you uninstall a file if it was compiled in the wrong directory?

Provided you haven't deleted anything, you should just be able to run make uninstall
