installing mplayer in knoppix

I am a total newbie, could someone explain how to install mplayer in Knoppix?
I downloaded this file: MPlayer-1.0pre4.tar.bz2

In Terminal, I entered tar -jxvf MPlayer-1.0pre4.tar.bz2
then cd MPlayer-1.0pre4
./config

I also downloaded a file called essential.tar.bz2, which is supposed to give Mplayer quicktime & realaudio support...
then entered tar -jxvf essential.tar.bz2 in Terminal

What am I doing wrong? What should I do instead?
Please help... thanks.

Try to:
Enter the dir created by the untar process. Read the readme or install files.
Most source code can be compiled by doing (as root):
./configure
make
make install

This is done from a console, inside the dir created when you untared the package. But you should really read the install/readme files and prefer those instructions.

Afer I've done that, it seems to have installed.
Where do I find Mplayer now? I've checked under /usr/bin ..nothing there.

EDIT: There is an Mplayer executable in the Mplayer-1.0pre4 directory
Nothing happens when I click on it

To find the binary do:
whereis mplayer

To run the program do:
mplayer somefile

Usually, I right click on the media file, choose "Open with" > mplayer.

If you want it to look like something when you are opening it from within a GUI, you'll need to open the graphical front end to it. I think that's gmplayer.
