I have just ordered an SSD (128Gb) and intend to install Mint 17.1,Rebecca, on it. Is there anything special I need to do before installing? I have the installation disk, but don't remember carrying out any special preparatory tasks when I installed previously. However, I have since read that there are one or two things to do prior to installing, but this tended to be a bit confusing. Thanks in advance.
Not unless you want to. Some people prefer to partition the drive ahead of time using gparted or similar in a live CD, but that's entirely optional, the Mint installer will do it for you if you haven't already.
Once it's installed you might want to edit /etc/fstab and add noatime to the mount options for the SSD, but that's about it.
Are you replacing the drive in the PC and (re)installing it to the SSD?
If so, and you would like to have your apps/files seemlessly move over with the installation, then you can image your drive using something like clonezilla and install that img to the SSD. Shouldn't give you any issues.
Edit: I would like to add that I recently upgraded from a HDD to an SSD. I literally didn't notice a performance difference so much (though I'm sure there technically was one) that I popped the HDD back in for the extra space and put the SSD on the shelf.
