Installing mandrake ISO on new PC

I've just built a new PC and have decided to try out this Linux thing I've heard so much about. (not a big microsoft fan) so I downloaded the ISO files of Mandrake 10.1 and burned them to 3 discs. Went to the BIOS on my new PC and set the boot loader to CD-ROM, put the 1st disk in and let 'er rip. And it just gives me a disk boot error, and tells me to put in a system disk. I figure that there's something I've got to do to the ISO Files but I know less than nothing (but I'm a big fan of learning) so help me out, and educate me if you could.

You need to burn it as an image.

Can I burn it as an image using windows or does it have to be Nero

It has to be Nero or Easy CD Creator or some other program--Windows vanilla won't do it. However, you can use a trial version of Nero to burn your first Linux ISO. All versions of Linux have free sophisticated burning programs available for you to burn future ISOs.

Thanks. I had a spare sittin' around so I've got the images burned. It loads the installer (almost) But then it hits me with a "fatal error before initialization is complete" message. and I can't go any further.
Can you help me there?

Well, it's one or more of the following problems (let's hope it's only one):

1. The ISO somehow got corrupted during download.
2. The disk image didn't transfer correctly to disk
3. There's something wrong with your hardware.

It's likely one of the first two. Do you know how to do a checksum on a disk image? If the MD5 sum matches, you may also want to try burning at a slower speed (4x or 8x).

How do you do a check sum and what is that all about? I'd love to learn all I can. I don't go to college. I goto online forums. :) I'm gonna try a reburn for the 1st CD image.

Follow the link above. I know how to do a checksum in Linux, but that won't help you. Follow the link.

Ok well, I reburned the Image and I'm still getting a "fatal error completing initialization" message just as it stars "loading program to memory" Maybe it's the ISO I downloaded, do you know of a dependable Mandrake ISO I can download?

If you use BurnAtOnce - a free (no cost) Windows program - to burn your ISO images, the program is able to verify the checksum for you.

different options

1. it may well be the cables plugged in to the disk dirves, if you have the floppy drive cable flipped, it will give you that error on some bios chipsets. or it could be a master/slave issue on the disk drives and cdroms

2. when you are downloading, always find the tiny file usually accompanying the iso you download, regarding that iso's MD5 sum
find a MD5 sum calculator, they have them for linux windows and i believe mac
it will take a minute or 3. i know one of the windows md5 calculators, when you have is calculate a 700mb iso, it looks like it just stalled out, just wait a moment, he's a cookin up a somethin.
make sure the MD5 calc and the downloaded MD5 value match. then you will know that the iso is solid

3. when buring have it "verify burned disc", i know it takes twice as long but it can save a lot of time of you thinking you just properly installed a system, but a few little files just aren't quite right.

4. slow down the speed at which you burned the disc.

once you are installing, if you are still getting errors never forget to play with the boot options like failsafe and acpi=off they too can make a world of difference
