installing linux Ubuntu
I downloaded Linux Ubuntu
sent it to 32 Gig USB so how do I install it to my computer? in such a way to replace Windows XP ? Computer is HP Compaq 5.1 .2600 service pack 3 build 2600 When I click to install the download, I get Roxio Disc creator, which does nothing. I tried hitting F(9 at the boot menu, and I selected the usb drive, but Windows still came up. |
Hi!
You cannot simply copy the .iso to a USB stick. You have to write the cd image properly. Read more here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/In...e_from_Windows Best regards, HMW |
If you click on the Ubuntu iso file and get Roxio Disk Creator, you should have some option to create a bootable DVD image of it, generally something like "burn as image" rather than copying which of course won't work. If you want to use a usb, is your xp computer capable of booting from a usb drive?

I used Rufus to create an installation USB-stick for elementary OS, which is in a way similar to Ubuntu. It was a very easy process; of course the computer (a Dell from 2004) had to be set to boot from the USB drive.

If you're using Windows XP, it sounds like your system might be older, which means that Ubuntu could run quite sluggish at best. What exactly is model and model number of your Compaq? What you mentioned above is the version of Windows XP. ;) Just as some advice, you might want to get help from a local Linux user's group (to install Linux) or take your system to a computer repair technician or shop that also specializes in Linux.
