installing linux programs
Why don't linux programs come pre compiled and with their dependencies? And why are they usually available in tar.gz AND tar.b2z?

They probably work better when built to your machine.

They are usually available precompiled.
Check into 'urpmi' on Mandrake, or view the list of dependicies in the RPM package manager and install them.

Remember, the beauty of opensource software is that you GET THE SOURCE. Yeah, if you just want the program, its not that big of a deal, but if you want to custromize it, or just be sure what's on your system, getting the source is a blessing.

What's more, the binary is dependent on the library version (for example libc++XXX.so). Since Linux is renovating itself very fast and use newer libraries on the going, quite often the pre-compiled binary is not usable on the new system. It is must to recompile it. The same thing applys on the Kernel.
Am I right?
