Installing Linux on virtual machines

Does anyone know how well Linux runs on virtual machine software like Virtual PC or VMWare?

I tried installing Red Hat 7.0 on VMWare but the colours are really bad - 16 colours at 640x480 only. VMWare tells me I should install VMupdates in the guest os but I do and it makes no difference. Help?
