Installing Linux on Sony VGN-FE670G

I recently received a Sony Vaio VGN-FE670G and was wondering what would be the best version of linux to install and how to go about activating all the hardware.

I was thinking of installing Ubuntu but am unsure of what to do once it's installed. I am computer savvy and know what I'm talking about so no need to water it down, but simpler would be better (as I've never had linux on a pc before).

I recently installed Open Suse Linux on a Vaio and was expecting to have to install all kinds of extras for hardware compatibility, but was surprised to find that everything worked "out the box". I was expecting to have to install drivers for the touch pad, usb ports etc, but they all worked fine.

(although just noticed its dated 1998....but like i said, my installation on a vaio required nothing added so maybe recent versions support the vaio better)
