Installing Linux on iPod 3g?

Just had a couple of questions :
Can I install it on my iPod ?
What website do i go to to download?
What are the "pros" of installing Linux on your iPod?

Thanks :)

Look at the upper right of this page. Click on Distro Reviews to get information and on Download Linux to select one to download. Another good site is distrowatch, just google it.

But will it work?

Can i choose any distro for my iPod ?

I doubt it because I don't think the iPod uses an x86 CPU. Check out http://www.ipodlinux.org/ and see what you can find out there.

Linux on the iPod unlocks infinite expandibility of a hard drive driven portable device
So you can have linux on your IPod.its a nice idea man.dont worry. you can play with extra applications and games tooo when you are using linux as os on IPOD.
uClinux kernel is the best suitable kernel for the IPOD. it detects all kinds of hardware device which concern of your IPod
IF ANY GOES BAD OR PROBLEMS OR CRASHES.
JUST SWITCH BACK TO YOUR APPLE FIRMWARE OS BY INSTALLING
FROM Apple's handy Firmware Restore Utility
http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/
Are you happy? Dont forget to make me happy by thanking me!

Sorry, this is mostly incorrect.

The iPodLinux projects (http://ipodlinux.sourceforge.net and http://www.ipodlinux.org) are based on uClinux, but it is NOT uClinux. It's a custom port, designed to fit the iPod. A regular uClinux distro will NOT work.

Extra apps/games/etc?? How, exactly? A great deal of stuff isn't working right now, as these are not very well developed, and definitely not ready for the masses, and they say so on their pages.

The download link takes you to an iTunes download. From their own pages, the only way to remove this totally is to "dd" the device, and essentially wipe everything out.

To be honest, running linux on your ipod doesn't have many "pros" to be completely honest (aside from being able to play doom on it and the novelty, which gets old considering how difficult it is to do anything useful).

If you'd like to run linux on your ipod, as stated above, ipodlinux is the easiest way to do this. Not sure if much has changed since I did it, but I had to play around with partitions and stuff to install it (potentially dangerous if you don't know what you're doing).

As someone who has ran multiple OSes on my ipod (5G) I recommend http://www.rockbox.org/

Rockbox is an Open Source OS for your ipod that is super easy to install, and will unlock some things (such as being able to play FLAC) on you ipod (its also pretty much impossible to screw up, and you can easily restore your ipod with iTunes if you do).

If you still have your hopes set on linux, feel free to give it a shot (it is, at the very least, a learning experience). The project seems pretty dead these days though, so you might have trouble finding support.
