Installing linux minus CD-ROM or a floppy

My laptop is currently on the way out, technically speaking. Rather than fixing the damn thing, I'd like to get a working Linux distro on to it. The problem is that the cdrom drive refuses to work at all, and the floppy stopped working a while ago. Is there any way to partition and format the internal hard drive from windows, and place an installation of either ubuntu or debian on the disk that could be upgraded over the internet?

My set up is:

Windows XP Home Edition (OEM)
Toshiba Satellite 1100
20GB Hard Disk

I also have a power mac 266MHz which is running Debian, and is working as a music server.

the easiest way would be to install the hard drive into another laptop and install linux on that, then replace it.

Installing without a raw media will be a tough job. The other alternate is what the former has said. I hope the link below will help you regarding this.
