Installing linux in a (dead) Dell server
 

Well i will try to explain all the situation, in my company we get a dell server (in this moment i dont remember the model) is a old model with a pentium III and 256 in ram, but we have a problem the server have windows NT4 installed but dont work well, actually we cant go inside NT because have a problem with services drives or something like that, i want to use that server to conect 5 pcs and one mac to internet and for backup files and in the future to administrate projects, apache, and mysql.
The questions
How i can delete windows and install linux in this machine?
Which version (free is better) of linux recomend me?

If you have a cdrom that you can boot from you can install by booting the cdrom. The setup will include being able to remove all partitions and use the space for linux.

If you can't boot the cdrom you can make a boot disk from the images and dos utils on the cdrom.


You still have to download the iso files and burn the cd if you want to get it for free, otherwise go out and buy the cds.

DavidPhillips is correct, during the installation you will be given the option to reformat the existing harddrive. many distributions of linux have a "server" installation - this usually wipes out the existing disk automatically.

I would suggest RedHat 7.3 for your server. I love mandrake for my desktop, but couldn't get it to work with my old HP Netserver. RedHat works great!! good luck!

You should buy ( or borrow ) the Installation CD-ROMs for Red Hat Linux 7.3. Probably you can buy them from the Computer center in a local university or a computer store there. Basically, Linux is free, but it is OK for you to pay a few dollars, for each CD. That's legal. If you cannot find the CD-ROMs in your city, you can buy them from LinuxCentral.com or CheapBytes.com in the USA, but that's harder, since you are not in the USA. The Download is huge. There are at least 2 and possibly 3 CD-ROMs, to install Red Hat Linux 7.3. I recommend that you get the Installation CD-ROMs and install that way, it is *much* easier! I hope to get the CD-ROMs for Red Hat 7.3 next week, from a university here.

Also, quite often computer magazines will feature complete download editions of various distros on their cover-mounted CD/DVDs. Normally in .ISO format, but occasionally as bootable DVDs.
