Installing Linux for the first time

Hi everyone.

I'm new to Linux, and i wish to install Suse 9.0. The problem is that i am using S-ATA (ich5r chipset, 1 disk) and the installation hangs at bootup. In the bios, i switched to Compatability mode and it booted fine, but later gave me a message that no hard drives could be found. This happened on both Suse, Gentoo and Fedora (latest distros).

I take it that i need Kernel 2.6 etc to make it work with S-ATA? Are there any distros available with 2.6 yet? Or is there anyway i can pre-compile a 2.6 kernel for installation with Suse 9.0?

Thanks,
Jasse

The Mandrake 10.0 beta release has the 2.6.2 kernel. I don't know when the final relaese wil be.

The latest Knoppix 3.4 will have a 2.6 kernel as an option. It has been release yesterday in a German magazine only, but I imagine it will be released for downloading this week.

just take the mandrake beta i think (or whatever one has s-ata suport) and install the very essentials only, then recompile the kernel so you know for a fact s-ata is suported, then install whatever you want
