Installing Linux after Windows on the same harddrive.

I was wondering how I would go about installing Linux on a hard drive that has two partitions. I have a 80GB harddrive with XP on one of the partitions and the other partition with nothing on it for Linux. My question is when I install Linux on the free partition will I lose my MBR and not be able to boot into XP? I really have alot of things on my XP partition that I can't lose. I heard that Linux has it own boot manager that will automatically detect XP? By the way will Linux automatically see my SATA hard drive?; or will I have to have some kind of floppy driver disk that you need with Windows NT/2K/XP/2003? Im not a noob...but im kinda lost with Linux.

Thanks for any help you can provide...

P.S.: Im going to be using FreeBSD linux.

Yeah, when you install Linux the bootloader configuration should let you choose to add Windows to the list. Even if it does not, you can do it afterwards and there are many guides on LQ and on the web to help.

Just make sure that you don't accidentally wipe your XP partition during the install, you could back stuff up just in case.

As for detecting your SATA drive, I don't see why not. Maybe look in the Linux hardware compatibility list (HCL) here on LQ to see if your exact drive has an entry.

Dunno about FreeBSD, it's not Linux though (but it's still Unix based). If you're familiar with Red Hat, then maybe give Fedora a try.

Loads of people will have recommendations of which distro to try. Those might not be right for you, so the best way is just to try some and find out what you like best .

FreeBSd is unix based but not entirely like Linux. it shares some common elements but is vastly different on installation.

Right now im going to try SUSE on Virtual PC. I tried Mandriva but it wouldnt install . Basically I have XP on a virtual machine right now and going to install linux so I can simulate what im going to have to do without the risk of losing my data.
