installing linux
 

I WANT TO INSTALL LINUX 8.0 ON MY HARD DRIVE. I HAVE ALREADY PARTITIONED IT INTO TWO PARTITIONS. HOW DO I INSTALL LINUX ON THE SECONDARY PARTITION SO I CAN USE WINDOWS XP WHICH IS ON MY PRIMARY PARTITION.

There is no Linux 8.0, there is however a button to turn your caps-lock off...

10 easy steps:
1) Don't create a second partition - delete it!
2) Put the "RedHat" Linux Disk in the drive (CD or DVD)
3) When the install options come up press enter
4) Follow the on screen instructions
5) When it gets to the partition stage tell linux to leave existing partitions and to use the free space available - it will create a partition table for It'self.
6) Continue to follow the onscreen instructions.
7) I would use Grub as the boot loader
8) Should be about time to reboot into linux
9) Configure Grub to boot XP - There is plenty of information available telling you how to do this.

10) Reboot and choose which OS to boot.

I am having problems installing red hat 8.0. I set it to automatically partition my hard drive. When I do, it has some message about the inconsistency of the space or something and tells me to make a boot disk. I tried loading linux but it gives me an "crc error" and says "--system halted". What partition program should be used on a hard drive with windows 98? Disk Druid or Fdisk?

I would just use disk druid.

Do you actually have free unpartitioned space or do you just have free space on the windows partition

EDIT: at what time does it fail? Does the installation copy files?

My problem happens when it boots for the first time right after the installation. The GRUB boot loader works and I am able to load Windows 98 so the boot loader works. The problem happens when loading linux from GRUB

to ROC47: the replay from david_ross is the way to go - you should stick with it.

to lordslayor: Why don't you try to install it again, but this time configure partitions on your own. I have a small idea how they should be for RH 6 (hihi), so with a little space boost it should apply on RH 8 as well.
I believe that this way the bootloader will get a little cluttered, but with the help of 'man grub' you should be able to find how to delete useless entries.
