linux 4.0 does not exist yet! The latest version is 2.6.25
You must be refering to a distro which is version 4.0? Let me guess, RHEL (Red Hat entreprise linux)?
Please try to find the name of your distro and post it here.

What distribution of linux are you trying to install (Ubuntu, Fedora, Debian, Suse, ... there are a lot of them)? Judging by the number it might be Debian 4.0. There's no such thing as linux 4.0.
What kind of disk is it? Is it IDA or SATA? I used to have problems installing some distributions on SATA. Can you try some other distro e.g. Ubuntu and see what happens...
