installing libpng problem
 

when installing mplayer, i need to have libpng.so.2 available. to do this i downloaded libpng-1.0.14-0.7x.3 and installed it (i believe i did this correctly, as no error msgs showed up).

now i can't install mplayer b/c it says i still need libpng.so.2, even though libpng-1.0.14-0.7x.3 is supposed to have installed libpng.so.2.

what gives?

Every time I have touched libpng I have found their version numbers to be messed up. Yes, libpng-1.0.14-0.7x.3 is supposed to have installed libpng.so.2. However the fact that libpng version numbers do not work as advertised is nothing new. Try creating the libpng.so.2 symbolic link yourself and see if that works.
