Installing Japanese Fonts on Slackware
 

I'm a slackware newbie, just installed it today. Got it working better than what my last post in the Hardware section (ALSA is a *****)

My question is, how do you get and install Japanese fonts for Slackware 9.1? And if possible, is there a Microsoft IME clone for linux? (I can type in "hai" and it would produce hiragana letters) I want to be able to at least view Japanese fonts say in Epiphany (GNOME Mozilla) or Abiword or any application; being able to type like in IME would be very cool.

I tried installing an RPM of TrueType fonts and restarted X but that didn't work out. I also heard the Wnn isn't "free" anymore.

Any clues?

hi

i have no idea about wnn and ime but if you have japanese fonts just drop them into /usr/share/fonts and run fc-cache or logout of the interface and login back and you can get the fonts inside applications. i am sure there is japanase fonts available. i just removed them a while before in my machine. ask the slackware forums for more information

for gtk2 apps suchy as Epiphany you can use im-ja:
http://im-ja.sourceforge.net/
you'll need either canna or freewnn conversion server installed.
instead of installing the RPM, try extracting the font file(rpms can be opened and extracted by midnight commander) then install it manually, to $HOME/.fonts
If you have another windows machine/installation try using MS Gothic, imo its the best looking J font.
