Hey guys, sorry for another post. I dissed Mandrake hoping RH would auto detect my modem that is hooked up via usb. I tried going into my internet setup thing but I cant find my modem in there. And I was told that compiling the kernal wouold help? I have no clue on how to do any of that, and Im a real NEWB at linux. I only know about 20 commands so far (cd,ls,touch, more, etc). Is there any way I can get connected to the net? When i tried Knoppix, the first time i used it I was connected to the net without even configureing anything. I was wandering if there is a way to do that in RH or Mandrake. If they had a REAL version of Knoppix out there that you ACTUALLY install oh man that would be SOO great. Hope you guys can help me.
However, this is not a reason to unistall it. You have to work at linux, i'm a newbie too, but if your looking for things to be easy, stick with windows.
Mandrake drak told me i needed mgmt.o file for my modem ( and yours should have reported back ). I had to find this file and copy it to /usr/share/speedtouch/.
Yes it took me a few hours, but thats linux. stick with it and use the online resources if you hit a problem, i now have working internet btw :-).
Yeah you see, the problem is, I dont know the type of modem i have. Its unmarked, and I dont have the papers or booklets on it cuz i am renting it from Charter Communications. I was told the only way to get my Cable Modem to work is to recompile the Kernel. I have no clue on how to do this. Is there a script out there that will do it for me WITHOUT having to be online (I have the newest version, I just need to install the kernel). Also, I might be going back to mandrake cuz RH is too 'big' for me... the graphics are worste than windowz xp :S . anyways, hope you guys can help me
What is "cable modem"? Externel? In some cases, you don't need to recompile your kernel, just compile the driver and insert it as a module. I am in this case.
Have you tried to search on google your modem driver under linux?
if it needs mgmt.o its probably an alcatel usb adsl modem!!
I'm running one under slackware, there's plently of help out there for it.. If this IS the case yell back and i'll post the config stuff for you, i'm at work at the moment and don't have it on me.
