installing glibc 2.3/lib6

I am using debian and I downloaded glibc I think from the GNU and I am sure its the wrong one ... I ran it by saying "tar -zxvf ." in the folder where it was thinking that it will install the glibc.tar.gz file .... and I doono what happened now even when I say dselect -s lib6 it gives errors...

It used to show installed ok before.... what do I do?

Where do I download packages from ? please help... I dont mind even just getting my system back to where I was ...
