Installing GCC 3.4.2 w/ SUSE 9.1 personal

I'm extremely new to Linux and almost everything about it. Our first task was to install SUSE 9.1 Personal on our computer and I've successfully done that after figuring out Disk 1 was a Live-CD not an install CD.

Our next task was to install a compiler and our teacher suggested GCC. So, I went to GCC's website and downloaded 3.4.2. I downloaded the roughly 23 MB size file, extracted it and now have a folder with all of in it. Now I'm stuck. I tried configure but I got an error.

Our teacher said something that 9.1 Personal didn't come with the make command. Do I need it? If so, how do I get it?

A step by step guide would be great, but any help I can get would be greatly appreciated.

In order to compile gcc from the source you need to have a compiler already installed, so that means you need gcc to compile gcc.
Best way is to download and install from RPMs
