installing gAIM and firefox
 
hi, I've been a windows user all my life and I've just started using Linux. I started out with knoppix and am now on Suse 9.1 The only thing I'm missing is gAIM and firefox and I have no idea how to go about downloading and installing them. I was wondering if anyone had any tips or advice, preferably in dummy terms :-)

HINT #1: Get Slackware 10.1 much more configurable.

i no nothing on suse :P but i slackware 10.0 i downloaded firefox from the mozilla site. and it had a gui install when i ran the binary i think ?.
anyway you should probably have a package manager and should be able to fetch gaim and firefox and it will install them?

I think with Suse you can use yum to install things. I'm not sure. You can use the rpm file if you can find that also.

:) Why I like debian, apt-get solves these problems.

I'm not sure about Suse-specific packages. There's always RPM, or you could hand-compile them.

The way I understand it, installing Firefox is pretty much the same on all distributions. Go here, download the installer, and run it.

In Suse there should be a program called YaST which you can use to search for and install software. You're probably better off posting this quesiton in the Suse forum. Slackware, Gentoo, Debian, Arch, Suse, etc.. all have methods of installing software without manually downloading the package. It's just easier on some distro's than others. :)

Like Slackware for example. You just type "./configure && make && make install" and it's all taken care of. :)

Unless you receive compilation errors. Then it becomes slightly more complicated.

That's true, but where's the fun in having no errors? :)

Back to the topic, SryImPolish, you can look up "yast" online or type "man yast" to figure out how to do that, or, if that isn't working, go to http://gaim.sourceforge.net/downloads.php and download gaim from there.

I like debian better.

apt-get install firefox

DONE

No errors, not dependancies, just installed and on your way. :)

I forgot about yast though. It's nice and should do the trick.
