Installing from Source Repository in Ubuntu

I have an x86_64bit computer, and I would like to install Ubuntu 64bit. But not all packages come in 64bit, last I read anyways, some are still being compiled for 64bit. So I was wondering whether it was possible to install programs from the repository, but from source, like Gentoo. I would like to start compiling the programs that I install any ways, just for the sake of performance. And if you have any tips for 64bit systems, all are welcome, I'm at an beginner-intermediate level, so I can handle a bit of terminology. Thanks a lot.

There's some pointers here for dealing with the source repository in Debian. I imagine the process is similar in Ubuntu.
